On the first floor, the heritage of Pensacola is on permanent display. Walk around rooms filled with artifacts of how Pensacola was founded and grew into the center of activity for the Northwest Florida area.

Dive into the history of the City of Five Flags, but make sure to stop by the front reception desk to get the scoop on all the features of the museum and the changing exhibits throughout the museum.




The ongoing historical preservation effort by West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc. - a community service organization of University of West Florida.


The second floor is home to several interesting exhibit spaces. They change throughout the year to present a wide scope of topics.

The Blue Wahoos! Learn about the history of baseball in the Pensacola area and about the growth of the minor league team. They play at the Bayfront Stadium and are an AA-affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.




Explore the world of early photography! The Camera shop exhibit has several displays of vintage cameras with information about the beginning stages of the film industry.






Back by popular demand! T.T. Wentworth, Jr.'s collection of unusual artifacts. Originally, T.T. Wentworth, Jr. had his collection for display on the road in Ensley, a small city north of the Pensacola area. In 1988, Gov. Bob Martinez signed a state grant to renovate the city hall building into the museum we see today. His collection consist of several items of historic significance to the Pensacola area as well as other eccentric items that T.T. Wentworth Jr. gathered. You have to see for yourself!



Guantánamo Public Memory Project is a traveling exhibit that the T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Museum hosted on the third floor of the building. In 2012, students from 11 universities, including University of West Florida, came together with the goal of spreading an informative presentation of how an obscured Guantánamo Bay reflects people and issues happening in their own communities.

Each student group put together a panel; Some questioning aspects of Guantánamo and others exploring the rich culture of Guantánamo Bay. The exhibit brings to life the stories of people that have been affected or have a connection to Guantánamo.

The exhibit was closed at T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Museum on June 23, 2014.

Increase%20garage%20sale%20profits%20with%20some%20marketing%20basics As the weather warms up, garage sales begin appearing all over the U.S. Garage sales are a great way to clean out clutter while making some extra dollars for home improvements, bills, vacations or even "retail therapy."



Marcela Iannini, department chair of Advertising and Design & Media Management at Miami International University of Art & Design, says, "Garage sales are great opportunity to employ basic marketing principles in a fun way; a little innovation and creativity go a long way to maximize sales."



"It's important to start with the basics of marketing - the four P's - price, product, promotion and place. In garage sales it works best to think of the product as the garage sale itself and the items to be sold as product lines or brands of that product," adds Cheryl Pilchik, Advertising faculty at The Art Institute of Philadelphia.
Dr. Larry Stultz, department chair of Advertising and Web Design & Interactive Media at The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, agrees. "It is imperative to use the same thinking retailers use to maximize the visibility and sales opportunities for a garage sale."

Below are some helpful suggestions from Iannini, Pilchik and Stultz on making the best of your garage sale:

* Product and price: Product mix is important in retailing. You can either focus on one type of product (kids' toys or garden tools, for instance) or a broad mix of products. Study sales in your neighborhood to see what works best. Check out the prices, too. You should consider not only the original cost, but also what others charge at sales like yours. Rather than use a lot of time individually pricing each item, consider grouping like items together on large tables, posting the same price for all items on that table - like retailers do.

* Place (scheduling/location): Think about a high-traffic area - retailers pay a premium for high-traffic locations. Perhaps you can team up with several neighbors and choose the house that has the most street visibility. Knowing your target market is paramount in timing your sale. Consider scheduling with other activities in your neighborhood - art shows or community events will help draw additional traffic.

* Promotion (advertising/marketing): A successful garage sale requires careful planning and promotion using proven advertising strategies to make your sale stand out. One successful strategy is choosing a theme related to the items to be sold and carrying out the theme in all aspects of the sale. For example, if most of the items to be sold are from the 1980s, you'd play 80s music, have everyone working at the sale dress in 80s style and use 80s elements in your flyers.

Whatever your theme, consider the following to promote your sale:
1. Neighborhood signs and flyers, placed on local business, PTA and school/church bulletin boards - and where permitted, on street corners or in yards.
2. Local newspaper listings and online listings like craigslist.org.
3. A social networking fan page with an event for the garage sale inviting friends and family.
4. Your own Facebook and Twitter pages to inform your "friends" and "followers" about your event.
5. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest on the day of the sale to distribute special offers, share photos of items for sale or offer incentives for referring fans or customers.

Give your garage sale a facelift to keep it fresh and appealing. Borrowing effective strategies and tactics used in the merchandising and advertising industries to engage the customer and communicate with them on their terms will help to ensure your success.

Life insurance 101: What you need to know



(BPT) - Life insurance. Everyone says it's important, but it can be a difficult topic to talk about and even more difficult to understand. However, it is critical to understand this topic because of its importance to building your financial strategy.



Life insurance can help you provide for the people and organizations you care about. Choosing the right life insurance solution gives you peace of mind knowing your loved ones will be taken care of. * Term life insurance - Temporary life insurance that offers a death benefit and is generally less expensive than permanent insurance. It's ideal for short-term life insurance needs, like when you are raising a family, paying off a mortgage or starting a business.

American Flags

Summer isn't just the season of baseball, barbecues, vacation and fresh produce. It's also flag season. Three of the country's most important patriotic holidays - Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day - arrive with summer, and across the nation proud Americans will show their patriotism by displaying the American Flag.

But will they do it properly?

"Fewer symbols inspire more patriotism and pride than the American Flag, and displaying it is a wonderful way to show respect not only for our country, but for all those in uniform who have defended it throughout our history," says Larry Singleton, decor manager for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, which displays an American Flag beside the fireplace in every restaurant. "Honoring our nation's Flag Code guidelines can make the display of the flag an even more poignant and patriotic gesture."

The federal law known as the "Flag Code" establishes a guide for handling and displaying Old Glory. If you'll be showing your American pride this year by displaying the flag or decorating with bunting, here's a thumbnail review of the code's guidelines so you can be confident in all you do:

* It's OK to display the flag 'round the clock, but you should illuminate it during nighttime hours. If you're not able to light the flag at night, the code recommends displaying only between sunrise and sunset.
* Hoist it briskly and lower it slowly and ceremoniously.
* Be sure to bring your flag in out of rain or snow - unless it's made of an all-weather material, in which case it's OK to leave it out in inclement weather.
* If you would like to display a flag on your car or truck, affix it to the chassis or clamp it to the right front fender.
* Many Americans are also proud of their ethnic origins and may choose to display the flag of their heritage along with the American Flag. That's fine; just be sure that the U.S. flag is displayed higher up, or if the flags are on the same level, the other flag should be placed to the left of the American Flag, never to the right.
* The blue and white stars field - known as "the union" - should always be up: at the top of the flag if it's on a staff or pole, uppermost and to the observer's left if the flag is being displayed horizontally or vertically against a wall. Displaying the flag with the union down is a signal of dire distress and reserved for instances of extreme danger to life or property.
* The flag should be kept from touching the ground, floor, water or anything beneath it.
* Flag-themed decor can add a welcome patriotic touch to your home, but it's best not to get carried away and use the American Flag as bedding or drapery.
* Bunting is an acceptable patriotic display; arrange it with the blue portion at the top, the white in the middle and the red at the bottom.
* When a flag becomes worn and is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way. One way to do that is to give the flag to a local VFW for proper disposal.
"Americans show their patriotism and American pride in a number of ways, from buying red, white and blue products to placing flags and flowers on the graves of veterans," Singleton says. "Displaying the American Flag in a respectful manner is one more way Americans can honor their country this summer and all year long."
