3 Things You didnt know about Smoke Detectors!

Life Saving Tips regarding your Smoke Detectors
A fire can erupt in seconds and destroy a home within minutes. Is your family protected?

Check the manufacture date
on your smoke detectors!
1.  Did you know that smoke detectors have an expiration date?
If you look on the back of your smoke detector, you will find a date printed. This is the date the smoke detector was manufactured.

Regardless of whether your smoke detector is hard wired or powered by battery, the sensory mechanism in your smoke detector is only good for 10 years after this date. Smoke detectors manufactured before 1999 have a 4-5 Serial number and are not stamped with a date. Of course, this means it’s time to buy new detectors!

2.  When testing your smoke detector, remember, that that loud beep just means that your electricity is connected or your battery is functioning, and does NOT guarantee that your smoke detector is working.  The only true way to test your detectors is to use actual smoke.  Order some canned smoke from your local hardware store to properly test your smoke detectors twice a year. Or use a simple burning candle or flame from a lighter to test your smoke detectors.

Remember, you should change your smoke detector batteries twice a year, when you change your clocks. At this time, it’s best practice to check for that manufactured date on the back of your smoke detector.

3. You should have at least 2-3 smoke detectors in your home for complete coverage, more if your home is larger. And always have a back up plan:  You should have a fire extinguisher and all family members should know where it is and how to use it in times of emergency.
